Mysterious Child

Part Three

Spike woke up feeling extremely comfortable. He sighed happily and snuggled down in the bed. He felt an arm move across his side and a hand fell across his stomach. For a second he started to panic, then he remembered it was just Xander. He opened his eyes and yawned, then slowly got up. Xander grumbled as he moved but didn't wake. Spike quietly left the room and went downstairs, checking to make sure Joyce wasn't there before going to the fridge and helping himself to some blood.

Buffy came in as Spike sat down. She made a face at his cup of blood. "That is so gross."

"Don't knock it till you try it," Spike told her with a smirk. Buffy rolled her eyes.

"I take it you're in normal mode right now?"

Spike nodded. "Yup, but don't count on me stayin' that way. I'll probably swing any minute."

Buffy sighed. "And I used to think you were annoying just like this."

Spike chuckled and took a sip of his blood.

"Where's Xander?"

"He's still asleep."

Buffy nodded and glanced at the clock. "He'll probably be there a bit longer, it's only nine. On a weekend, that means sleep in."

Spike nodded absently, only half listening. He'd just spotted the paper that Buffy brought in earlier, and the front page caught his attention.

"Oh bloody hell," he muttered.

"What?" Buffy asked.

"Remember the demons we were researching? They broke into a shop the other day, a lot like the Magic Box, and took a bunch of stuff. Took a book of spells, too."

Buffy frowned. "This just gets weirder and weirder."

Spike nodded. The front door opened suddenly.

"Oh, shit," Spike leaped up and made a break for the stairs. He made it before Joyce got there and ran inside the room. Xander was just getting up.

"Hello," Xander greeted sleepily.

"Joyce just got back," Spike told him.

Xander woke up fully. "Oh, that's why you came tearing up here so fast. Why don't you just go tell her, I'll help."

Spike sighed. "This is getting ridiculous. Fine, I guess I don't wanna hide from her all the time."

They went back downstairs. Spike paused on the stairway as Xander went the rest of the way down.

"Hi Joyce!" he greeted cheerfully, giving Spike a look. "Buffy's letting us stay here because we've got a demon after us."

"Us?" Joyce asked.

"Me," Spike spoke up, hands automatically going to cover his stomach.

"Oh, hello Spike," Joyce said. She peered closer at him. "Is something wrong with your stomach?"

Spike started to talk, failed, looked pleadingly at Xander. Xander laughed.

"We found out about this Vampire that can have kids," Xander told her. "Both male and female. Spike's one of those Vampires. He's got a kid."

Spike came the rest of the way down the stairs. "Weird when you first realize it." he told her.

Joyce looked at Spike's swollen stomach, then nodded. "Yes, I think weird about covers it. You're going to keep it?"

Spike nodded vigorously. "Yup."

Joyce smiled. "Well, then, it's not bad or anything, so I suppose I should be happy for you. How far along...?"

"Five months. Only problem? I've got demons after me, or it, or both of us."

"That would be a problem."

Someone knocked on the door, and Joyce went to see who it was. Xander moved toward Spike in a protective way as Joyce opened the door. He was surprised when he felt Spike's hand curl around his.

Suddenly they heard a crash from the direction of the door. Buffy started toward it when someone who looked human walked in.

"Who're you?" Buffy asked.

"I have no interest in you, Slayer. Stand aside."

"Who do you want then?" Buffy asked, hand going for her stake.

The demon pointed to Spike.

"I'm not going anywhere with you," Spike spat at the demon.

The demon smiled coldly. "Yes, you are."

Xander stepped closer and glared at the demon. "Buffy, why don't you show him out?"

Buffy grinned. "Good idea."

The demon, however, was faster than they expected, he managed to dodge most of Buffy's attacks. Then with one swift kick to the head he knocked Buffy unconsious and walked toward Spike and Xander.

"You are of no importance, step aside," the demon said calmly to Xander. Xander shook his head.

The demon reached toward Spike, ignoring Xander. Xander was about to do something when Spike somehow kicked out and hit the demon hard in the stomach. The demon flew across the room....

Right onto Buffy's stake.

Xander hadn't seen her get up, but Spike had. He let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding and looked at Spike.

"Thanks," he said to both of them. To Buffy. "You better go see if Joyce is okay."

As soon as she left Spike whirled around, buried his face in Xander's chest and burst into tears. Xander wrapped his arms around Spike.

"It's okay," Xander murmured in Spike's ear.

"I know," He sniffed. "I'm in crybaby mode."

Xander laughed gently and led Spike back upstairs. Spike went and laid down in the bed. Within seconds he was asleep. Xander watched him for a moment before going back downstairs.

Joyce and Buffy were sitting at the table. Joyce had a bruising spot along her hairline, but otherwise she was fine.

"Are you and Spike okay?" Joyce asked worriedly as Xander walked up.

"Yeah, Spike's upset, but he's asleep right now."

Joyce nodded. "Good. I didn't notice anything wrong with him at first, and then I saw the eyes before he kicked me."

Xander sat down with them. For a while they just sat there talking. Then they heard a noise and saw Spike coming down.

"You alright now?" Xander asked.

"Yes," Spike snapped.

"You in touchy mode?"

"Yeah, but only because it keeps kicking me!"

They tried not to laugh, honestly they did. Spike glared at them for a minute, then the laughter got him and he started to laugh too. He went over to the fridge and got more blood, then started digging through the freezer.

"What're you doing?" Buffy asked.

"Ice-cream," He told her. "I need ice-cream."

"Spike?" Joyce spoke up.

"We don't have any ice-cream."

"What?!" Spike whirled around. "I need ice-cream and I need it right now!!"

Buffy started laughing again, but Xander glared at her and looked at Spike. "What kind?"

"Chocolate," Spike answered instantly.

Xander nodded. "Okay, hang on, I'll go get some."

Xander took off for the store. Spike sat down.

Xander soon got back with the ice cream. He didn't even bother to put it in a bowl, he just got a spoon and gave the thing to Spike.

"Thanks," Spike told him before attacking the stuff. Xander made an amused sound and sat down.

"So why do these things want Spike?" Joyce asked.

Buffy shrugged. "We don't know yet. Probably some prophecy thing."

Spike stopped eating long enough to say. "And we don't really know if it's after me or after the kid."

Joyce nodded. "Alright." She raised a hand to her bruise. "I think I'm going to go rest."

Buffy followed Joyce. Spike stopped eating again and pushed the ice cream away.

"How's this gonna work then?" he asked Xander. "They seem to know where we are no matter where we go."

Xander shook his head. "I don't know. It was close even with Buffy here."

Spike nodded. "What happens if they do get me?"

Xander looked at Spike. "I'll get you back."

"And what if...." Spike trailed off. "What's born? And they take it somewhere..."

"Then we'll get you out and...."

"No!" Spike shook his head. "If they take it, I want you to promise that you'll find it first."

"Xander, just bloody well promise."

Xander sighed. "Fine, I 'bloody well' promise."

Spike nodded. "Thanks."

Spike suddenly noticed Buffy standing there in the doorway with a funny look on her face.

"What?" he asked.

"Maybe you CAN raise a kid," Buffy said slowly.

Spike raised and eyebrow at her, then nodded. "Course I can."

Buffy left the room. Spike slid a hand down to his stomach and repeated. "Course I can."

Part Four

Spike sat in front of the mirror staring at the reflection of Xander sleeping behind him. Even after 127 years he still often expected to see himself in the mirror. He sighed and looked down at his stomach, running a hand over it like he'd been doing a lot. It had now been eight and a half months. They hadn't seen a demon in a month, and Spike was begining to wonder if they had decided not to come after him after all. Sighing, he started to get up to go back to bed when a funny feeling raced up his spine. He froze, then turned and walked to the door. He cracked it open and peered down the dark stairway. Nothing. He frowned and closed it again.

The feeling ran up his spine again, and he peeked out again. Shit, were they back? Again he closed the door and ran over to Xander.

"Xan? Xanpet? Wake up," he whispered loudly.

"Wha...?" Xander asked sleepily.

"Wake up, I think there's something downstairs."

"Go back to sleep," Xander murmured.

"No...bloody wake up!" Spike shook him again, but Xander was completely out of it. Spike sighed, then opened the door and went downstairs to prove to himself that there wasn't anything down there.

Just as he turned to go back up someone grabbed him from behind.

"Xander!" he yelled. A hand clamped over his mouth and he started to struggle. He saw a demon step in front of him and he felt the cool tip of a dagger press to his stomach. His eyes grew large and he stopped his struggling.

"If you cooperate, we will not harm your child," The black haired demon in front of him said. Spike nodded quickly. The demon nodded to the blond haired one holding Spike. "Take him to the van."

The blond nodded and led Spike outside. He shoved him into the back of the large black van and pointed toward the floor. Spike sat nervously, furious that he was so helpless, but at the same time scared for his child. He saw the demon pick up a a needle and his nervousness grew, though he tried to remain calm on the outside.

"Now now, Kain, you're scaring him!" A voice suddenly said from the corner. Spike looked over to see an old man come out. His eyes were the same, but calmer. He took the needle from Kain and walked toward Spike.

"It's alright, it's just something to help you calm down," the old man told him. "Now you be good and hold still for a moment."

Spike sat perfectly still while the old man gently poked the needle into his arm. He talked the whole time. "My names Luther, you're probably that Spike fellow they've been tracking. It's quite impressive that you managed to avoid them so long, though I suppose you did have a Slayer to help you, that would help things quite a bit. I don't agree with the way they do things around here one bit, but I can't do anything about it, I'm too old. They let me take care of the ones they bring in because it keeps me happy. Now, I'll help you any way I can, but don't ask me to help you escape, I can't do that. No one's ever gotten away from them, I don't think."

The man pulled the needle out and paused his talking to look at Spike, as though waiting to see if he had any questions.

"What are they going to do to me?" Spike asked finally.

"Nothing too bad," Luther said. "See, we don't have any females, and we aren't like you. We also can't breed with humans. So they go around capturing your type and using them. If you're lucky they'll let you keep your first one, but the rest they'll take."

"Hold on, I thought we could only have kids at a certain time," Spike pointed out.

"Oh, yes, we've found a way around that. Now, don't worry, they don't keep you in a cell or anything, it's just a nice little room, and you can wander around all you like, but don't try to get away. It's not a good thing, let me tell you. You just cooperate with them and thing's will be just fine."

"No, they won't, I may actually have a shot at getting a relationship finally and now you're telling me I can't see him again?" For some reason the thought of never seeing Xander again wasn't a good one. Wasn't a good one at all.

"No, I'm afraid you won't be able to see him again."

Spike shook his head. "Not exceptable. And mate? I have a way of getting out of places that most people can't."

Luther grinned. "Good luck then. If you get out I'm making an award."

Spike let a quick grin flit across his face for that one. His eyes started to droop suddenly, and he allowed himself to fall asleep.

Spike woke up but didn't open his eyes. He could hear voices around him and concentrated on them.

"He must be pretty far along," a female voice said.

"Looks like it," A male one answered. "How far along you think, Mark?"

"By the looks of it almost nine months," Another male voice, Mark, said. "Stacey, you should get back a bit, he's probably gonna be a bit scared when he wakes up."

"No, not this one, I know this type. He'll be scared on the inside, but he won't show it on the outside." Stacey answered cooly. "Aaron, could you get some blood ready for him?"

"Yeah, sure," There was some movement and then a beeping sound as some blood was put in the microwave. The smell of it drove Spike to open his eyes and sit up.

"Hello there," Stacey greeted. "You've been out for some time, Luther must've given you too much."

"Where am I?" Spike asked. oh now there's a typical question, mate

"You're in L.A. You're also in the demons place, you can't get out, we've tried."

"L.A....?" Spike repeated. A thought formed in his mind. "I might have a chance then!"

"Why?" Mark, the Vampire with black hair and green eyes, asked.

"My Sire lives here."

"Hey, you do have a shot," Aaron, who had sandy hair and light blue eyes, spoke up. "Who's your sire?"

"Oh my god, seriously?" Aaron looked excited. "Way cool!"

"Who's Angelus?" Stacey, she had curly honey hair and hazel eyes, asked.

Aaron stared at her. "Who's Angelus? Only the coolest Vampire who ever unlived!"

"Aaron, you're the only one who thinks that," Mark said. "Personally, I don't ever want to meet him."

Aaron walked over with a mug of blood and handed it to Spike. Spike nodded in thanks and sipped it hungrily.

"Look, I think he's cool, you don't, that's that."

Spike spoke up. "He's got a soul now, he's with the good fight and all that."

Aaron shrugged. "Yeah? Oh well. None of us here are evil either, really. We aren't good, we don't go around saving the world or anything, but we don't do too much evil because of the kids that we do get to keep. Course, we can't do much in here anyway."

"Okay, enough with that. You got a name for your kid yet?" Stacey asked.

"Yeah, Ginny Alex if it's a girl and William if it's a boy," Spike answered.

"Cool. I like the name Ginny, and Alex is cool if she's boyish."

Spike nodded. "I got that name after Alexander Harris."

"He your boyfriend?" Mark asked.

Spike laughed shortly. "No, but I was sorta hopin' he would be."

There was silence for a moment. Then Spike asked. "So what do you do for fun around here?"

Aaron barked out a short laugh. "Not much. Talk with each other, wander around. Have fun with the 'Breeders.' when they're on."

"Breeders?" Spike asked.

"Yeah, they're the ones trained to keep us preggers," Aaron told him. "Usually they'll buddy up to you first, but sometimes they just get down to business. You won't have that problem for a little while, since you've already got a kid."

Spike groaned. "I'm liking this less and less."

"There is one fun thing to do," Stacey spoke up. "If there's one thing these guys CAN do well, it's cook. Which is dumb, I know, but they can. It's kinda fun trying to steal their food, and they don't do anything to you if you get it, cause they figure if you were sneaky enough to get it you can have it."

"Sounds better than nothing," Spike said with a shrug. He followed Stacey out of the room.

They played at that for a while. Then Stacey showed him around. As far as Spike could tell there really wasn't much to their lives. There was a lot of training going on, and the games they did play all seemed to be somehow made for warlike purposes.

"Looks like they don't have much fun," Spike mentioned to Stacey. She shrugged.

"Guess not. I dunno, maybe to them this is fun."

"Beating things up? Well, yeah, that is fun, but not all the time."

Stacey laughed. "Yeah, beating things up is fun, but like you said, not all the time. Just a few hours a day. Sometimes Mark and I fight for the fun of it. We've got lots of energy, it drives us nuts being locked up in here. Aaron's a much calmer Vampire, he just like's snuggling with Mark."

"I take it they're together?"

"Yeah, they have been for 72 years. Mark is Aaron's Sire, but they don't act like Sire and Childe, and they never have."

"That's alright."

Stacey nodded. "I never really knew my Sire. He was killed right after he turned me, so I had to find someone else to train me."

"How old are you?"

"Only 102. You?"

"Mark's 398. Aaron's 396, only two years younger."

"And they're both a rare type of Vampire."

"Yeah," Stacey laughed. "Aparently Aaron's ego swelled up quite a bit when he first learned, even though he freaked out when he learned why he was rare."

Spike laughed. "I didn't 'freak out' too much, but it was bloody weird."

Stacey nodded. "Especially for you guys. I mean, for a female it's just like "oh, okay, that's cool" but you guys aren't suppose to be able to have kids at all so you're all "AAHH!!" and stuff. The funny thing is it's more common in the males than it is in the females."

Spike frowned. "That doesn't make any sense. Shouldn't it be more common in the females?"

Stacey shrugged. "It would make more sense."

They headed back toward the room. Mark and Aaron were snuggled up together, sound asleep. Spike pulled aside the heavey drapes on the only window in the room.

"Wait a minute," Spike stared hard at the building not too far away. "That's the place I tortured Angel!"

"That's the place you what?" Stacey asked.

"Angel, he's my sire, Angelus? He changed it to Angel, I tortured him over there. That means we're not too far from the place he works."

Stacey shrugged. "That would be a good thing if we could reach him. I'd love to know how we're gonna do that."

Spike shrugged. "I'll find a way, I'm good at that kind of thing."

Spike went back over and sat down on the ground again. "I'll sleep on it, maybe I'll have an answer when I wake up."

Spike allowed his eyes to close, hoping he'd dream up a way to get him and the other three out of there.
